Welcome to East London Railway  


The new East London Railway will be part of the new London Overground line linking Dalston and Highbury with New Cross, Crystal Palace, Croydon and Clapham Junction. It is being built in two phases.

History
1869 Opened as East London Railway. Used Brunel’s Thames Tunnel (opened in 1843).
1913 Line electrified
1933 Became part of London Underground.
1987 Shadwell became an interchange for DLR
1989 Proposal to run Bakerloo tube trains north to Dalston & south to Peckham Rye
1996 Proposal agreed by government
1997 Project put on hold
1999 Canada Water built as a interchange for Jubilee Line.
New proposals included extending to Wimbledon via East Dulwich & Tooting.
2001 Government gave go-ahead to project.
2003 Work commenced on Northern extension
2004 Control of project passed from Strategic Rail Authority to TFL.
2006 It was announced that the line would form part of London Overground.
East Dulwich extension dropped.
June: Shoreditch station closed as it was to be replaced.
Film
1960 tubes to be replaced by London Overground trains in 2010.
2007 22 Dec :Existing East London Line (Whitechapel - New Cross) closed until completion of Phase 1).
2009 Feb: Phase 2 gets go-ahead but proposed Surrey Canal Bridge station put on hold.
