75 Years Ago: Festival of Britain
Festival of Britain was a national exhibition and fair held throughout the United Kingdom in the summer of 1951. Key sites were on the South Bank and in Battersea Park. iI served as a "tonic for the nation" to lift public morale after World War II and celebrate British achievements in science, arts, and industry. The primary exhibition site on the South Bank showcased modern architecture, technology, and industrial design. Key buildings:
Royal Festival Hall: The sole permanent building surviving from the main exhibition site.
The Skylon: A futuristic, cigar-shaped vertical tower suspended by steel cables.
Dome of Discovery: The world's largest dome at the time, dedicated to scientific exploration. Colour film of the Festival (3:37 mins)
South Bank Centre, Belvedere Rd, London SE1 8XX
