Early Sparking Wine producers were Peter Hall at Breaky Bottom and Stuart and Sandy Moss at Nyetimber. The majority of Sussex vineyards are based either on the chalk of the South Downs or on the greensands to the north. This major geological feature that runs through East and West Sussex has a significant calcareous influence on Sussex vineyards, providing ideal free draining soils for viticulture. In 2022 Sussex Wine was recognised as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Decanter story.
