In Victorian times Cliftonville was very much the smart end of Margate and the shops on Northdown Road reflected this. In the 1970s Northdown Road suffered after overseas holidays affected the number of visitors to Cliftonville. In the last few year Northdown road has seen an influx of new businesses alongside established ones.
